On 17 January 2019, the Registered Organisations Commission (ROC) became aware of the Post Election Report of the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) dated 15 January 2019, which identified irregularities in the process of an election of The Australian Workers' Union - West Australian Branch (AWU WA Branch).
One of the irregularities referenced in the AEC’s report related to a claim by a candidate in the election that they had been blackmailed into withdrawing their candidacy from the election.
The ROC determined that the matter raised in the AEC report required analysis and assessment.
Following analysis and assessment, the ROC then referred the matter to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on 4 March 2019 due to the nature of the issues raised in the matter.
On Tuesday 9 April 2019 the ROC received a media inquiry in relation to this matter and provided the information above. The ROC is unable to comment further on this matter now that it has been referred to the AFP.
